The K-1 visa, also known as the fiancé(e) visa, allows U.S. citizens to bring their foreign fiancé(e)s to the United States to get married. The marriage must occur within 90 days of the fiancé(e)’s arrival, after which they can apply for adjustment of status to obtain a Green Card and permanent residency.

Step 1

The U.S. citizen files a petition with USCIS to request the K-1 visa, demonstrating the legitimacy of the relationship.

Step 2

Once approved by USCIS, the case is forwarded to the National Visa Center (NVC) for further processing.

Step 3

The foreign fiancé(e) attends an interview at the U.S. consulate in their home country, providing required documents and proof of the relationship.

Step 4

Upon approval, the K-1 visa is issued, allowing the fiancé(e) to legally enter the United States.

Step 5

The couple must marry within 90 days of the fiancé(e)’s arrival, fulfilling the visa requirements.

Step 6

After the marriage, the beneficiary can file Form I-485 to apply for a Green Card and obtain permanent residency in the U.S.
